And Sample Wedding Vows.
Below are a
collection of sample wedding vows that express a variety of
values, priorities, and commitments. As you read them,
consider how they might be incorporated into a complete wedding
ceremony featuring the sample wedding vows.
What is a
vow? Certainly, we associate vows with
religious traditions, but in a far more practical sense
vows are expressions of commitment. Essentially,
the Groom promises and the Bride promises. They
exchange their heart commitments expressed in words.

What are the promises in this set of sample wedding
vows?
Groom: I (name), take you (name) for my
lawful wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for
better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in
health, until death do us part.
Bride: I (name), take you (name) for my
lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for
better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in
health, until death do us part.
Keep in mind
the commitments may be the same from Bride to Groom or them may
be very different.
Consider this set of sample wedding
vows.
Groom: I (name), take you (name) to be my
wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for
richer or poorer, to provide for you and protect you, in
sickness or in health, to love and to cherich till death do us
part. And thereto I plight thee my troth.
Bride: II (name), take you (name) to be my
wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for
richer or poorer, in sickness or in health, to love, cherich,
and respect till death do us part. And thereto I plight thee my
troth.
Do you see the slight difference in the
pledges. These subtle difference can make a big difference in
the relationship of husband and wife.

In the first
set, there is a mutuality expressed with not differentiation in
roles.
In the second
set, the groom commits to provide for and protect the bride
while the bride promises to demonstrate her respect for
him.
